The Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA) is a globally recognized framework that defines and categorizes skills required by professionals in information and communication technology. Use our free tool to assess yourself.
Education Opportunities
Ucol offers courses that combine IT skills and practical experience to ensure that students become industry-ready professionals. Qualifications include a Bachelor of Information and Communications Technology, Diplomas in Technical Support, Graduate Diplomas and Certificate programmes. They also offer Assessment of Prior Learning which can help IT professionals obtain formal qualifications from their work skills.
Massey University allows people from industry to attend their courses if there is a specific skill you want to pick up
IT Professionals NZ offer a broad range of regular short courses covering topics like Security, Governance, Strategy, Project Management, People Management, and Communication Skills.
English for Employees is offered locally if you (or some of your colleagues) would like to brush up on your workplace English. The Palmerston North branch has offered IT-focused classes for groups of 8-10 people. Courses are free for residents and citizens. Class times are flexible, and can be held in evenings or on weekends to accommodate work hours.
Internships
Find a Placement
Many local companies accept interns as part of your academic study, or after graduation. If you are a student, check with your course coordinator first so companies don’t get flooded with enquiries.
Other things to try:
- Some Jobs are for interns. Create an account and subscribe to our daily job mail so you know when a new one comes up.
- Scholarships can help with study costs. Some may come with employment or internship opportunities.
- ManawaTech Students can connect you with opportunities and a supportive community.

Interns can bring fresh ideas and energy to your team. It’s hard to hire intermediates and seniors at the moment. So let’s make our own and support the future of tech by investing in people just starting out.
Finding Interns
- Te Pūkenga (UCOL) have two cohorts of interns a year, plus regular student projects.
- Massey have projects for Mechatronics and Computer Science students every year.
- Summer of Tech have hundreds of interns listed. You don’t need to wait for summer either
- interns.co.nz bring hundreds of overseas interns a year. A steady percentage are looking for tech roles
