Real time data at PNCC: David

Palmerston North Software Developers | Meetup

2026-07-23 17:30

David says: "I will cover how we created a data lake at Palmerston North City Council that has near real-time processing capabilities (ie every minute) using streaming technology (specifically Kafka via [https://www.confluent.io/](https://www.confluent.io/)). I will also emphasize how this methodology for managing data facilitates creation of agentic workflows. To wrap up I will share an example of an agentic workflow that relies on our near-real time data." Thanks to Objective for hosting and sponsoring pizza. Please RSVP so we know how much pizza to buy. We usually walk to Aquaba or Brew Union around 6:30-7pm for the social half of the meeting.

Pong on FPGA: Programming hardware with high-level languages

Palmerston North Software Developers | Meetup

2026-08-27 17:30

Julie Schwartz is doing a deeper dive after her lightning talk in April: "Everything can be done in software running on a general-purpose CPU, but when would you want to use a special-purpose chip? Or a re-configurable chip, like an FPGA? And how do you write the spec for that dedicated hardware? We'll demonstrate how the video-game Pong can be written in a few short source files in Bluespec, a high-level hardware design language (HDL), and go through the process of compiling it, loading it into the FPGA, and booting up the hardware to play!"
